Ghent, whose medieval heartbeat is palpable, is a most magnificent city, complete with a very well cared for castle called 't Gravensteen (Castle of the Counts), a variety of well-preserved architecture, and a superb nightlife. The city belongs to the students who live there temporarily, and the tourists that visit but make no mistake, Ghent is known for its passionate natives who thrive on excellent beer and local products, the city's many great restaurants and bars, and its annual street festival in July, the third largest in Europe. In winter, relatively new traditions include a light festival and a huge annual Christmas market. Whatever time of the year, you will not regret a visit! Check my blog post with more images and a delightful documentary that nails the spirit of the city - as I hope does the photo journal below. All photos are my own.
